PRESENTATION


 

a or an?

Use a before a consonant sound: a doctor, a celebrity, a university.

Use an before a word beginning with a vowel sound: an animal, an hour.

Use a/an (indefinite article) with

  • singular countable nouns: a girl
  • adjective + noun: a small dog
  • occupations: I’d like to be a pop star.
  • possessions and residences: I’ve got a huge car. She lives in an enormous house.

 

 

TIP
Don’t use a/an with plural nouns (a-girls) or uncountable nouns (an information).
